Former AMOLF Phd student Andrea Cordaro receives an NWO Rubicon grant to start his research project ‘Mathematics at the speed of light’ at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in the United States.

Cordaro did his doctoral research in the group of Albert Polman (Photonic Materials) and graduated with honors (cum laude) at the University of Amsterdam. At Harvard he will work on mathematical operations using light, which is advantageous because it allows for calculations at the speed of light using less energy. Cordaro proposes to use lithium niobate to perform on-chip time-domain signal processing. This technology could lead to the development of smaller, low-cost, and low-power hybrid optical-electronic computing chips.
