AMOLF postdoc Fanny Thorimbert (Nanoscale Solar Cells) received the prize for best PhD thesis from the French C’Nano, which is a national competency cluster in Nanoscience that is part of the CNRS research organization. The announcement was made at the annual C’Nano conference, held in Paris, on the 20th of March.

Fanny’s PhD thesis entitled ‘Bottom-up patterning by self-ordering of cracks for photonic applications: from curiosity to technology’ has been awarded because of its quality, originality and excellence. In her thesis Fanny studied the fabrication of films that are used in different products, for example protective coatings. During the fabrication process cracks can appear and these are generally considered as major drawbacks. Fanny took a different approach and turned the inconvenience into an advantage.
