After filing for a patent together with colleagues, Agustin Alvarez (Hybrid Solar Cells) is ready for the next step. Recently, he received an NWO Faculty of Impact Award that helps him to take an important next step towards achieving societal impact with his invention.

The award includes an intensive two-year program. Agustin will be coached to develop important skills to transform his ideas into a scalable commercial start-up.

Agustin is happy with this opportunity. He says: “It’s hard to have a direct impact on society with your research, because there is this gap you have to cross from the lab to a marketable product. The grant helps me to bridge the gap.”

Together with co-founder Sarah Gillespie, Agustin will bring to the market the recently discovered technique called Intensity Modulated Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (IMPLS). It overcomes the limitations of existing methods used to measure ionic migration in halide perovskites. Agustin explains: “We have developed a purely optical technique for measuring ionic, chemical, and defect processes in halide perovskite semiconductors.”
