Electronics Engineering group
The Electronics Engineering Group makes the electric circuits needed to carry out the cutting edge experiments at AMOLF. The electronics must work extremely precise and often under extreme conditions such as vacuum, high temperature, or high-interference.
“At AMOLF, we are researching the very cutting edge of photonics, metamaterials and power generation. Our scientists look at the smallest of structures, measure the smallest charges, and visualize structures on the nanometer scale. The electronic equipment that we design, build and maintain, makes this possible.”
Science support
“The core activity of the Electronics Engineering team is science support. This can mean providing the correct cable, the right power supply, recommend a custom-built setup, or diagnose and troubleshoot an electron microscope.”
Science and communication
“Finding our what a researcher needs and creating the best solution, also requires strong communication skills. Sometimes a researcher will not know what equipment is available, or what technical solutions exist for their challenge. In these cases it is up to the Electronics Engineering team to understand the researcher’s needs and together translate this to a technical solution.”
My favorite part of the job
“The people I work with and AMOLF as an organization. The AMOLF ethos is to help each other succeed, and this is clear every day. If two people are sitting in front of a whiteboard with a blank stare, usually someone random will spontaneously join them to tackle the challenge. That kind of teamwork is rare, and very nice to be a part of.”
