About us
The AMOLF way
AMOLF has a unique approach to fundamental research, often referred to as “the AMOLF way”. This philosophy shapes how we create knowledge, organize the institute, and support talent.
Our scientific culture
AMOLF is known for its distinctive scientific culture and organizational model, often described as “the AMOLF way”. We believe that ambitious, curiosity-driven science flourishes in a focused and collaborative environment.
Our unique approach to fundamental research shapes how we create knowledge, organize the institute, and support talent. It is designed to allow new scientific ideas and young talent to flourish. We give early-career group leaders the space to build independent research lines and encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Our approach is based on the following principles:
- Focus on excellent science
- Invest in outstanding technical infrastructure
- Initiate and develop promising new research topics
- Maintain compact research groups
- Collaborate closely with colleagues, universities, and industry
- Foster a strong community spirit and social cohesion
How we work
AMOLF’s research spans a broad scientific domain, but all groups use physics-based approaches to explore complex systems. Researchers combine experimentation, advanced fabrication, theory, and computation to uncover how materials behave at the macro-, micro-, and nanoscale.
Daily interactions across disciplines create a fertile ground for new ideas. The institute’s scale, openness, and collaborative mindset enable researchers to bridge fields and develop new concepts quickly.
Training the next generation
PhD candidates and postdocs from around the world join AMOLF for hands-on research experience in a highly collaborative environment. About half of our PhD graduates and postdocs move on to academic positions in the Netherlands or abroad, while the other half find roles in industry, consultancy, and government.
